Layla weaves her dreams in 3D installations
View(s):‘DreamWeaver’, an exhibition of fired glass and paintings by Layla Gonaduwa will be held at the Barefoot Gallery, Colombo, from September 5 to 16.
The works are under five themes – ‘Dream Catcher’, ‘DreamSeed’, ‘Dreamling’, ‘DreamWeaver’ and ‘Emanate’, with the common elements among them being the glass enamel used, the abstraction and the stylised drawing/firing of it.
According to Layla the Dream Catcher is a 3D wall installations using glass on copper, zinc sheets and wire. It is an evolved shape of a traditional Dream Catcher, waiting to capture dreams, keep the good ones and release the bad.
DreamSeed is a circular shaped wall plaque using glass on copper and 14K gold in the form of a seed, taking root. Dreamling is a rectangular work using glass on copper and 14K gold and pure silver where dream is in its infancy, spreading into a reality.
Meanwhile, DreamWeaver is a circular shape using glass on copper, 14K gold and copper rings and copper wire, depicting how a dream may be woven, life breathed into it and bound into a tangible, solid thing. Emanate are paintings done in charcoal and pencil, oils and acrylic on canvas through which a hope or a dream emerges out of the depths of placidity, darkness or hopelessness.
Entrance to the exhibition is free and the Gallery opening times are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Tel 011-2505559.
