Sri Lanka was well and truly beaten in the opening day’s encounter at the Borneo Rugby Sevens in Malaysia yesterday. Japan the Asian Champions and the sole World Cup representative from Asia from 1987 gave no chance for the Sri Lankans when they ran home with an easy 34-7 win. At the short breather it was Japan who lead 12-7. For Sri Lanka the try was scored by Chamara Darage.

In the second group encounter Taipei edged out Sri Lanka 17-14. At the short whistle Taipei led 10-7. Sri Lankan squad led by Up Country Lions SC player Srinath Sooriyabandara and coached by former England sevens Skipper Ben Gollings are expected to feature in the Bowl semi-finals to be worked off today. Last year Sri Lanka won the Bowl Trophy and ended at number 9 position.
