Power Cuts: Colombata Kiri Apita Kekiri

View(s):

We are small entrepreneurs located in Dehiwela and have been coming under the continuous power cuts for the last one month from 8.30 am to 11.45 am everyday affecting the moral of our staff and creating a heavy backlog of work . Now almost all SME companies are going to face a severe financial crisis if this continues and might be forced to lay off staff. It appears the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is completely at sea and doesn’t seem to care at all. They have not thought how to handle this situation and just adopting a wait and see attitude and leaving it in the HANDS OF GOD. The Minister being an Electrical Engineer himself and bragging about — there won’t be any power cuts ever and saying CEB is running at a profit -looks a sorry sight now.

The unkindest cut of all is that while poor people across the country are suffering from the power cuts, the Colombo elite and the black money mafia enjoys uninterrupted power supply where a majority of heavy users have backup generators imported under concessionary rates. Casinos are using power 24/7 on neon lights signages and air conditioners.

This not the “Mahinda Chintanaya” we voted to look after the interest of common man. Even under that capitalist Ranil Wickramasinghe government power cuts were implemented right across the country including Colombo and big companies were forced to use backup generators and signages and neon signs were asked switch off including casinos. Our current minister who was a fire-breathing socialist at Moratuwa University seems to be pandering to the Colombo 7 elite and has completely lost control of the CEB and the goodwill of the workers.

May we also mention this discriminatory power cuts are a violation of fundamental right of equal opportunity and the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka should call for an immediate report from the Minister about this ‘Colombata kiri apita kekiri’-type of power cuts and take remedial action to implement power cuts right across the country and give relief to all. “Kaluwara Jayasuriya” looked after the poor people of this country and CEB workers better than the current minister.
