Scholarships to study in Australia
Many readers will know the University of Tasmania (UTAS) as an Australian university of global standing in research, teaching and learning. What readers may not know is that UTAS has one of the most generous scholarship programmes in Australia for international students.
A review of the University’s scholarship programme for 2013 was resoundingly in favour of keeping the Tasmanian International Scholarship (TIS) scheme. Students awarded a TIS receive a 25 per cent reduction in the registered tuition fee for the duration of theircourse. TIS are awarded based on prior academic results and for most programmes there is no quota, meaning if students meet eligibility requirements they will be awarded the scholarship. Most study programmes are included in the scheme.
The University has retained the TIS in recognition of the valuable contribution that high achieving students bring to University knowledge, campus life and the community. Over 20 per cent of students undertaking a Bachelor or Masters degree with UTAS are currently in receipt of a TISand 90 per cent of current students from Sri Lanka have received a TIS or other form of scholarship.
International students may also be eligible for other discounts or scholarships, including those available to continuing students or through specific institutessuch as the Australian Maritime College. There are also generous scholarships available for Higher Research Degree programmes at Masters and PhD level.
The affordability of study at UTAS often surprises students and their families, particularly given the University consistently ranks in the top ten universities for research in Australia and performs well in annual global ranking systems.
A 2010 survey found that 88 per cent of international students would recommend UTAS to family or friends and many students cite the scholarship programmes, in addition to the smaller classes and individualised attention, as being a major contributor to their study success.
As well as being a scenic island state, Tasmania has a lower cost of living than most other Australian study destinations.Geographically, Tasmania is just a little larger than Sri Lanka but has significantly less people, ensuring a relaxed lifestyle and easy access to infrastructure.
