ICFAI Education Lanka (IEL), which is a Board of Investment (BOI) Approved Company, was established as the Sri Lankan branch of ICFAI University in India in the year 2004. At that time no other foreign University branch was operating in Sri Lanka. IEL has been in existence in Sri Lanka for the last eight years, catering to a large number of Sri Lankan and Indian students. ICFAI is a ‘not for profit’ organization and is fully involved in all facets of education – offering degrees and other professional programmes, publishing books, case study material, magazines in management and other disciplines.

Since 2004 IEL had catered to a large student population of more than 700 offering Undergraduate Degree programmes – Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (BBA), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Degree (BSc IT) and at Postgraduate level in campus, Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA) and Distance Learning Programmes – MBA, Certified International investment Analyst (CIIA) and Certified Treasury Manager (CTM).At present IEL is emphasizing on Postgraduate level programmes – MBA in Campus and Distance Learning MBA programmes and Undergraduate level BBA and BSc IT Degree programmes, and plans to start Diploma in Banking and Foundation programmes.

Views of the Country Head of IEL

Mrs. Ranjanie Goonetilleke, Country Head of ICFAI Education Lanka and Dean Academics, who is responsible for operational and academic activities, was a senior banker and after retirement from Hatton National Bank got involved in the educational sector in Sri Lanka. She had been a Consultant in Banking and Finance and a Faculty Member at Postgraduate of Management (PIM) and former Director General of Institute of Bankers Sri Lanka.

In considering her exposure in the education sector for the last 10 years, she said that IEL MBA programme is a high quality Degree programme which prepares students with the skills, knowledge and strategic perspectives essential to leadership anywhere in the world. Their MBA programmes which have been designed maintaining high academic standards provide students both a portfolio of strong functional skills and the ability to apply, adapt and integrate those skills in different management settings.

BBA/BSc IT Degree Programmes

Discussing about their Undergraduate Degree programmes, Mrs. Goonetilleke said that BBA and BSc IT Undergraduate programmes are designed with the view to impart in-depth knowledge and broad understanding of the basics of management aspects and information technology. The BBA programme focuses on various areas of management education and prepares students for a career in management by enabling them to progress to MBA qualification in due course. The BSc IT programme focuses on various areas of information technology, enabling them to obtain a Masters Degree in the area of information technology. Presently, the students enrolling for the Undergraduate Degree programmes have an opportunity to follow the final year course work at ICFAI University in India to complete the Degree.

MBA Degree Programmes

Emphasizing on the MBA Degree programme, Mrs. Goonetilleke said that in most professional organizations, the Senior Managers are usually MBAs. There are more opportunities for MBAs than for almost any other functional qualification and their programme provides a quantum jump in career progression. Many of their MBA Degree completed students in the past have got promotions in their jobs or have changed the jobs for better prospects and career advancements. Some of the students have migrated to developed countries such as UK, Canada and Australia after completing the MBA Degree. Her opinion is that the MBA programme will be the person’s key competitive advantage as he or she enters the fiercely competitive business environment.

It will help him/her to move ahead of the pack and allow him/her accelerated access to senior and corporate management positions.

While discussing the academic set-up at IEL, Mrs. Goonetilleke said that they have selected the best lecturers in the country for course delivery and some of their lecturers are very senior academics from the national universities. The lecturers are well experienced and the panel is a mix of academics and experts with corporate exposure.

The teaching is on a practical approach based on theory and case studies and all the study material, textbooks, work books, and case studies are provided to students. In the new intake the MBA students will have the option of completing the final semester of the Degree programme at ICFAI University in India. The students will be taken for industrial visits in the main cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad in India during the study period.

In addition to the in-campus MBA Degree programme, the Distance Learning MBA Degree is also offered by IEL. DLP – MBA Degree consists of three stages and it is planned to arrange subject revision classes according to the requirements of the registered students. After completing each stage the students receive certificates.

Mrs. Goonetilleke said that students get value for money because IEL offers the most affordable quality Postgraduate and Undergraduate Degree programmes in the country. The MBA programme fees could be paid in 8 instalments and Undergraduate programme fees are payable in 12 instalments. These arrangements have been made to give more opportunities to students and to the parents to educate their children.

At the completion of each stage MBA students receive Certificates and Diplomas – Certificate of Business Management on completion of the 1st semester, Diploma in Business Management on completion of the 2nd semester, Advanced Diploma in Business Management on completion of the 3rd semester and MBA Degree Certificate after completing the final semester.

The undergraduate students receive the Associate Degree Certificate after completing two years of the Degree programme. Mrs. Goonetilleke emphasized that students are at an advantage by receiving Certificates and Diplomas at each stage since due to some reason if a student is unable to complete the Degree programme he/she is benefited by having some proof of gaining knowledge and skills by following a quality academic programme for their career progression in a very competitive environment.

She further said that the Degree courses offered at IEL are the best programmes offered in Sri Lanka. This is the general opinion of the parents, lecturers and students who have completed their Degree programmes.
