Lovers of Thambapanni
View(s):The Arpeggio Creative Dance Academy will present their eighth production to an international audience. ‘Kuveni-Vijaya: the lovers of Thambapanni’, a narrative of an age-old story told through contemporary dance will be showcased in India from September 3 to 9 in parallel to the world famous Buddhist Film Festival in Ladakh.
Nilan Maligapse, the Director of Arpeggio explains that this production is the result of an exchange programme between his dance academy and the Mahabodhi International Meditation Center in India.
Arpeggio is a dance academy that has been around for about 20 years-Nilan started the academy as an indulgence of his love of dance. He selects 15 very special students from rural areas every year and provides training free of charge; all in an effort to bring dancing closer to the hearts of those he teaches.
In India, they will be playing to a diverse and multi-ethnic audience thanks to the crowds the Buddhist Film Festival attracts from all over the world. ‘Kuveni’ will incorporate some very different forms of contemporary dance and will be performed by 14 of Nilan’s students. The ‘dance drama’ consists of 8 acts and will tell the story of Vijaya’s arrival in Sri Lanka, his alliance with Kuveni and her eventual banishment from Vijaya’s household.
Through this production, Nilan and his dance troupe hope to take Sri Lankan dancing beyond borders and show an international audience that the country is more than capable of experimenting and innovation.
