Malaka’s role in Radio plays
View(s):Young filmmaker, writer and radio play writer Malaka Dewapriya’s is to launch his latest book on the culture of radio drama ‘Nihon Sepa Lebewa’ (May you attain comports of worldly life in Nihon) at 3 pm on September 14 at Mahaweli Centre, Colombo.
An experienced short filmmaker who has completed his maiden feature film ‘Bahuchithavadiya’, a story around a multidirectional thinker in a rapidly globalising society, Malaka has collected ten of his radio play scripts written on different issues on the life of the consumer oriented citizenry of Sri Lanka, a population most of whom would aspire to leave the island for greener pastures in countries like Japan (Nihon).
Malaka has titled his author publication collection “Nihon Sepa Lebewa” (May you attain comports of worldly life in Nihon), satirically implying the aspirations of the average human being in a society duped by the luxuriousness of the life styles of developed societies, or the endless desires promoted by the system of capitalist economy.
The book launch ceremony will also include several speeches on the text to be presented by eminent critics in the field of arts and politics. Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri is to speak on the theme of ‘‘censorship, non-conformity and position of Artist’’ while W.S.Wijesinghe on ‘‘Satire as a social resistance’’ and Thilina Samasooriya on ‘‘the future of radio play under the dominance of mainstream media’’. This is Malaka’s second collection of radio plays.
“Nihon Sepa Lebewa” is a result of his continuous observation on various insane social spheres. He has observed the contemporary issues in this work. This book cover the recent trends in radio play writing, introducing some of the aspects of picturesque magic reality and all what is known as absurdism in the use of sounds as a medium of communicating the contemporary conscience.
He dramatized some modern verbal traditions applicably to his goal and changes “Niwan Sepa Lebewaa” to “Nihon Sepa Lebewaa” and “Theruwan Saranai” to “Tharuwan Saranai”. Radio drama used to be a more popular audio medium and a subject in recent past. It has lost that recognition in the present. The launch is organized by Contemporary Art Commune.
