Trinity College Kandy beat archrivals Royal College Colombo 10-nil to clinch the All-Island Schools Under-16 12-a-side Rugby Championship, which was held at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy last week.

The contest in the final was a showpiece of lightning fast Trinity three quarters against the neat forwards’ play by Royal, who also reached the Western Province Under-16 final recently. Eventually Trinity proved their might scoring two unconverted tries by penetrating the Royal defence in style.

The two spectacular tries for Trinity were scored by scrum half Anuka Boyagoda and winger Charitha Nanayakkara who steered their team to a well earned rugby plum. In the semi finals Trinity beat St. Joseph’s by 5-3 and Royal beat Mahanama in a penalty shoot-out 2-0 to reach the final. The competition took place under wet, muddy and slippery conditions but the young schoolboys dished out their hearts to provide superb rugby during the two days. The conditions however prompted three of the four quarterfinal matches to be decided by penalty shoot-outs and a toss of a coin which forced some formidable teams out of the contest.

The first to be stalled from their title contention were the Western Province champions St. Peter’s College who lost to Mahanama by 1-0. Then Isipathana College were beaten by St. Joseph’s College Colombo by 2-1 while Kingswood College Kandy were unlucky to lose to Royal by a toss. St. Peter’s however had the solace of claiming the Plate championship as they beat gritty Isipathana 10-nil. S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia beat Wesley College Colombo to win the Bowl championship while Lumbini College created an upset over Ananda College to clinch the Shield championship.
