‘Diamond’ gobbler in court tomorrow
The Chinese national, arrested for a bizarre diamond heist at the recent gem and jewellery exhibition in Colombo, will be produced at the Colombo Magistrate’s court tomorrow while the main accomplice is still at large, the police said.
Three days after the suspect swallowed what was initially believed to be a Rs. 1.8 million worth diamond, doctors at the National Hospital last week succeeded in retrieving it by administering laxatives. He is still receiving treatment and under observation at the Welikada Prisons Hospital, police said.
A crime detective at the Cinnamon Gardens Police said that the ‘diamond’ retrieved from the Chinese national had been sent to the Gem and Jewellery Authority on a court order to ascertain whether it was a genuine diamond or a fake one.
Investigations indicate that the Chinese national visiting a stall at the exhibition swallowed a fake diamond to distract the sales officials there so that his accomplice could get away with the real stone.
A senior police officer said the search for the second Chinese national was still continuing.
