TNA will consider forming common alliance in Eastern Provincial Council – if invited
A Cabinet Minister’s proposal for a coalition administration in thr Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) could be considered if an invitation is received, TNA Leader Rajavarothayam Sampanthan told a news conference yesterday.
“If the President invites us to form a coalition in the EPC, we will consider it, but so far no such invitation has been extended to us,” TNA Parliamentary group leader R. Sampanthan said in response to a question from journalists attending a media conference yesterday.
Mr. Sampanthan said the TNA, along with the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the United National Party (UNP), was staking a claim to help establish the next administration for the Eastern Province.
“Given the sordid track record of the Government and its various activities to disturb communal peace and harmony in the Eastern Province, the formation of a provincial government by the said three parties would be in the best interests of all the people in the province,” the TNA Parliamentary group leader said.
At the recent EPC polls, the TNA (Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi) secured 11 seats and is courting the SLMC, which secured seven seats, and the UNP, which obtained four seats to obtain a majority to run the EPC.
The TNA leader said political parties opposed to the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) had together won the election and had a clear majority in the Council. The TNA said the Provincial Council member who had the majority support of its members and became Chief Minister should be chosen by members of the three parties in the Provincial Council.
The UNP has said that it will back the TNA nominee for the post of Chief Minister of the Eastern Province. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka has written to the Governor of the Eastern Province, saying his party will support the ITAK nominee for the post of Chief Minister.
