S. Thomas’ begin season on winning note
S. Thomas’ began their 2012/13 Under 19 inter-school cricket season on a winning note with a crushing innings and 84 runs win over Mahinda Galle at Mt Lavinia yesterday. The foundation for the Thomian win was initiated on day one by Javed Bongso and Helakamal Nanayakkara who cracked half tons helping the side to amass a formidable score of 321 for 8 declared Bongso made a 69 while Nanayakkara remained unbeaten on 68.This was followed by a four wicket haul by right arm pacie Usman Ishak which paved the way for the Thomians to have the Mahindians tottering on 67 for 6 at the end of the first day’s play.
Mahinda resuming on their overnight score on day two were able to add only another 30 runs being bowled out for a paltry 97. Mahinda made to follow on with a massive deficit of 221 runs fared better but was unable to avoid an innings defeat. Mahinda in their effort to save the game found the right spinning duo comprising Devin Jayasinghe and skipper Madushan Ravichandrakumar too hot to handle as the duo shared eight wickets between them to restrict the visitors to 140.
