Chartered Accountants have perhaps the highest employability among professionals and it’s a great responsibility to live up to this qualification, a top professional said.

“Chartered Accountants are undoubtedly among the most sought after professional across the business world. As a new member of an internationally renowned and respected professional body, one must discharge the responsibilities well. You are expected by others to exercise due care and be accountable for all duties and functions performed by you,” said Pravir Samarasinghe, Guest of Honour at the Institute of Chartered Accountants Sri Lanka (CA) Convocation on Thursday.

He said that company owners, chairman, boards and CEOs rely on the information, opinions and recommendations given by their charted accountants. “Therefore it is very important that you live up to the CA qualification and satisfy the expectations made of you and the profession,” he said, adding that accountants are not only essential for proper financial management, but they sit at the nerve centre of any business organization and add strategic insight and value to the development of that organization which gives accountants that all important edge for career enhancement and growth.

“You hold a passport of global recognition and international mobility. You can expect rewards above market averages. Your strong financial skills and general business acumen opens out many opportunities, including advancement to the top.”

“If you take Sri Lanka’s publicly listed corporates for example; you will not be surprised to find a number of accountants on director boards,” Mr. Samarasinghe said.

Commenting about the responsibilities that evolve ahead, he said that as the world gets smarter and more competitive the demands thrown at professionals will only increase in the years to come. “As a professional it is important to understand that today’s not the end to education, no longer can professionals be static, continuous professional learning is a must if one is to stay relevant and at the top all the time.

This is why continuous professional development is crucial,” he said, adding that the reality is that professionals must learn more during the course of their careers than what they did for examinations as students.

He noted that obtaining membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka confirms that the holder possesses the necessary skills and competencies to function as a financial and accounting expert.

“However, skills and competencies alone do not make a chartered accountant a professional. The transition from accountant to professional is a journey that still lies ahead for those of you who obtain membership today and will be complete only once expertise is underpinned experience, strong values and ethical conduct,” he said.
