After A/L? Why waste time
Out of the students who sit the GCE A/L examination only around 10% can find places in the public sector universities in all the fields. This has created frustration among the youth and they wondered aimlessly without being able to continue their higher studies.
IDM having identified this problem way back in 1981 has introduced alternate ways of providing higher education to those who could not enter the traditional university system by starting up the first private sector computer school in Sri Lanka. According to the founder chairman of IDM, Dr. Bandu Ranasinghe, IDM has introduced many programmes in IT and Management to help school leavers to qualify & get into employment of their choice
IDM introduced new programmes progressively since 1981 to match the needs of the time. Some of such programmes were: Professional qualifications in IT through BCS & ACS, Academic Qualifications though NCC Education (UK), HND through Edexcel-UK, IHD through EdHat International-UK, Degree programmes through London Metropoliton University-UK, University of Wolverhampton-UK, University of Greenwich-UK and Trade certification through Microsoft, Oracle, Java, A+, CISCO etc. Most of these programmes were introduced to Sri Lanka by IDM. Dr. Ranasinghe said that IDM has established a very cost effective Education & Training Model for school leavers to acquire Academic, Professional & Technical qualifications. According to Mr. Lionel Perera, Director of Studies, this model has benefitted the IT industry by providing the human resource requirements and this model is being currently used by many training institutions in Sri Lanka. Mr. Perera further stated that Dr.Ranasinghe has taken several initiatives which contributed immensely to develop the IT industry such as; Founded ACTOS, reactivated the formation of BCS Sri Lanka Section, initiated the Best Quality Software Awards competition, introduced National Schools Software Competition projects.
IDM courses are of different categories depending on the needs of the students. For those who need awareness it offers certificate and Diploma programmes. For those who want to get quick employment there are short courses with different specialization areas which deal with the practical aspects pertaining to the area selected.
IDM’s main objective is to provide tertiary education to the school leavers. IDM has introduced Edexcel HND programme at an affordable fee with easy installment payments. Many B.Sc (Hons) degree programmes are available for those who have successfully completed the HND. All these degree programmes are recognized internationally in addition to being recognized by UGC Sri Lanka.
These degree programmes are conducted on part time basis providing opportunities for those who are working. Continuous assessment of students are done through assignments, group and individual projects, exams and presentations. Assignments and projects are so designed to assess the capability of students to apply the theories that they learn in the class room.
