Randil Perera writes from Adelaide, South Australia
View(s):I am Randil presently at the famous University of Adelaide in South Australia where I am studying for a Bachelor of Corporate Finance degree. I entered the university in February 2012 having enrolled through Edlocate.
I had my secondary education at St Joseph’s College Colombo and at the London A/L examination offering Economics, Business Studies and Accounting as subjects. I passed with good results and I was determined to select a good university to study abroad at tertiary level.
A close family friend of my parents introduced us to Edlocate and from day one I was quite comfortable with the way they handled my case. I had many questions. There were many occasions I wanted to meet them on my own. I did not want to make a mistake that would affect my entire future by making a wrong decision. I was doing my own research on information provided by Edlocate counsellors. These meetings went well and never did they show any displeasure regarding the information I requested constantly.
When I informed my parents that I wish to study at the University of Adelaide they were fully supportive and we were assisted to get enrolled with no difficulty. In fact I had time to go overseas on a sightseeing tour before going to Adelaide as I got the Australian student visa well before my date of departure.
Adelaide University is a big university. It is home to over 20,000 students and is highly recognized all over the world as a research based university. I couldn’t have been happier anywhere else. There are many international students from all over the world. Facilities are incredibly good, it even exceeded my expectations. Every facility that is required by a student is provided. Academic staff are very helpful and friendly, and they are always willing to help.
The method of teaching in Australia at university level is very different. It is completely student oriented. There is no one to tell students what to do so it is up to us to do our required work. The good thing about this method of teaching is that it allows students to be independent in studies and the lecturers and tutors are always there to help and to guide us when it is required.
My course so far is good and it is very interesting, but I was told that it is going to get harder in the coming years. At the moment I am doing very well in the course and I hope to continue the trend.
When I was going to Adelaide, some of my friends said that it is a sleepy town with not many attractions. I have visited Melbourne. Adelaide city may not be that big like Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane but it has all attractions one needs. Living in Adelaide is very easy.
It is a place that has everything and reachable in a few minutes. No long travel times are required. In my opinion it has the perfect atmosphere for studying. Being a Sri Lankan I am not the biggest fan of western food per se, but here I can enjoy different cuisines from many countries around the world – much more than when I was in Sri Lanka. I live in the University’s Adelaide Village and though it took some time to settle in, the transition was quite easy. It was just a matter of time and now I am a great cook too. A word of advice to new students- Be friendly and make as many friends as you can and don’t hesitate to ask help when you need it. When it comes to assignments, never leave it till the last moment. It would be best if you can start it as soon as you get it. The most important task is to finish the tutorial work before the tute because it can give you good practice and hints of what the final exams would be like. Also, if you set a day at the end of week to review all the work you did during the week, it’s an easy revision method.
Randil thanks Edlocate for showing him the way to brighten his future.
