Azhar Central take consolation to Kandy
Azhar Central College, Akurana took the consolation trophy to Kandy when they downed St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa by 77 points to 65 in the play off for the third place of the boys All Island Under 19 ‘A’ Division basketball tournament worked off recently at Reid Avenue.
The tournament was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association.
At the end of the first quarter, the Moratuwa boys were slightly ahead with 14 points to Azhar’s 12. But in the second quarter, Azhar Central came back to capture the lead with 33 points to St. Sebastian’s 25. At the end of the third quarter it was 54 to 46 with Azhar still in the lead and in the final quarter the Akurana lads piled on another 23 points while St. Sebastian’s were able to advance their score by 29 points.
This victory was a great boost for Azhar Central College who with very limited resources available to them, they were able to defeat many of the fancied schools and reach the final round of the tournament. Aazir Ramaz led the scoring for Azhar Central with 24 points, while Safith Saliheen 18 and Azim Zalam with 10 points was also on target.
For St. Sebastian’s Rushan Fernando 15, Amesh Costa and Nishan Perera were the main contributors.
