Living up to the promise of Promoting Balanced Nutrition, Pedia Plus has now initiated a valuable lecture series to the local medical community with the aim of sharing new knowledge for the betterment of paediatric medicine.
As the second in this lecture series, Professor Umberto Cornelli (MD, PhD, Dr Sci Hc Loyola University School of Medicine – Chicago, USA) made a marked contribution by delivering a valuable lecture on “A New Approach to Optimizing Children’s Health & Growth” on 13th July 2012 at Hotel Galadari, Colombo. The first of this lecture series was on “Prevention of Micro Nutrient Deficiencies in Children – The Clinician’s Role” on 23rd June 2012.

Professor Umberto is an adjunct professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Loyola University and he has been among the first investigators studying oxidative stress from the clinical point of view in Italy. From 1999 he has been a trainer at the AIOT School (Associazione Italiana di Omeopatia e Tossicologia) entrusted for the course of cellular oxidation and related pathologies. He is an honorary degree holder in Science from the Loyola University of Chicago for his contribution to the study of Alzheimer’s disease and oxidative stress. He has also chaired the presidency of European Society of Biological Nutrition (SENB) during 2002-2008. Professor Umberto’s contribution to the field of medicine cascades through several research publications in international journals.

In his lecture he shared the latest research findings on how oxidative stress effects the growth & development of small children. “In an immature intestine such as of small children, the presence of oxidative stress (OS) may generate many problems limiting their growth: conditions like diarrhoea, can be very frequent and damaging” he states. Some elements belonging to the category of Physiological Modulators (PMs) – physiological means natural and modulators meaning regulating – have antioxidant activity which could be used in the prevention and treatment of many diseases.

He also explained in detail that Lysine & Curcuma xanthorrhiza elements also belong to a category of PMs. “Lysine fortification improves the infant growth, the fat free mass, the immune response, and reduces diarrhoea episodes. Curcuma xanthorriza extract (better known as turmeric) is a traditional and well known remedy derived from the rhizome of the plant that has a millenary use for many GI and metabolic diseases. The turmeric is approved for human use by some of the most important Regulatory Agencies (USA and Europe) as appetite stimulant, and as remedy for liver/gallbladder complaints. Three other well documented pharmacological characteristics of turmeric are the antibacterial, antioxidant, and immune-stimulant activities. However, the activity on appetite, which is clinically relevant, was never explained properly. The hypothesis is that the activity on appetite may belong to the presence in the extract of many essential oils (particularly Xanthorrixol) that can mimic cannabinoid structures, which are known as appetite stimulants and antiemetic, without affecting behaviour. The cannabinomimetic activity may belong to the increase of ghrelin production that we documented after the administration of turmeric extract”.

He concluded, its the two components of this new product “Pedia Plus” (Lysine and Curcuma xanthorrhiza), are typical PMs and may protect the children’s gut from OS, maintain the enterocytes and gastric motility healthy, act as a shield for some bacterial and fungal contamination, and help to catch up growth.

A wide gathering of paediatricians participated for the event and they were acquainted with these latest findings and were provided with all medical research references related to the points discussed.

Pedia Plus is a premium growing up milk powder especially designed for today’s fussy children who don’t easily eat nutritious home cooked meals. It contains two unique ingredients – Lysine and Javanese Turmeric – which have numerous benefits to child’s health and development.
