The Eisenhower Fellowships programme is expected to continue its commitment towards raising the bar through new idea formation, its US-based President John Wolf said on Thursday.

He was addressing the Eisenhower Fellowship South Asian Regional Conference in Colombo from September 27 – 30 with the participation of visitors from different countries mostly from the region.

He pointed out that the programme had seen an increase over the years and believes the opportunity and need to work together is relevant in South Asia.

The latest batch of 21 fellows and 18 young business leaders in Sri Lanka participated during the conference.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake via video observed the dynamism of the leaders in the South Asian region.

He noted that during his recent travel to the region discussions centred on how the US could assist these countries and become players in the region while also remaining “clear eyed of the ongoing challenges.”

Eisenhower Fellowships former President Dr. Theodore Friend noted Sri Lanka’s interest in the programme and commented on the essay competition as a “drive towards a coherent Sri Lanka.”

He pointed out that Sri Lanka is proof that size does not matter in view of conduct and involvement in these programmes.

Leaderships undertaken by fellows comprise over 700 individuals from the other 1300 members.

Dr. Friend’s advice was to ensure that leadership was not simply the title one holds but also the imagination and inspiration with which one develops that matters.

The Eisenhower Fellowships also commended Ms. Sybil Wettasinghe, the renowned children’s book writer for printing a new book of songs and poems for children with inspiring thoughts and ideas.

Chairman of the Sri Lanka EF Chandra Jayaratne speaking on the occasion said the aim was to target a new generation of people with these ideas.

Ms. Wettasinghe described the new book as a “great book of inspiration” for the young readers. Eisenhower Fellowships identifies, empowers and links outstanding leaders from around the world, helping them to achieve consequential outcomes across sectors and borders. EF provides a transformational experience leading to lifetime engagement in a global network, where dialogue and collaboration make the world more prosperous, just and peaceful, the programme’s official website stated.
