View(s):An 5,000 acre IT park to be set up in Sri Lanka’s southern port city of Hambantota has cleared its latest hurdle with the project recently receiving cabinet approval, according to H.M. Gunasekera, Secretary – Ministry of Telecommunication and InformationTechnology.
He also added that the IT park would attract 100 high-end investors that would be coming in with Rs. 3 billion worth of investments over five years. And that this park would provide 50,000 new employment opportunities for the country.
Mr. Gunasekera’s comments were made at the September 21 Sri Lankan chapter inauguration in Colombo of the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC2), a body that certifies IT security professionals.
Further, Mr. Gunasekera also revealed that this IT park would be responsible, by 2016, for US$ 700 million in IT exports. This is in line with the government’s plan to elevate the local IT industry to a $1 billion industry by 2016.
Additionally, it also emerged that Sri Lanka’s current level of IT literacy was 38% and that this would be increased to 75% by 2016 and, to accomplish this, the government would build 3,000 IT labs in schools, with 200 IT labs having been built for this initiative to date.
