Another success story of IIT- Suren Nannayakkara, CTO of MAZARIN
View(s):“IIT students certainly possess an edge over other IT students. Now from an employer’s perspective, I can truly see the difference when I interview candidates from different IT educational backgrounds for the same position. Its astounding what a difference in teaching methodology and course structure can do for a student in terms of the industry environment” says Suren Nannayakkara, CTO, Mazarin.
A former student of IIT himself, Suren credits his career opportunities and growth to the foundation and skill set that was inculcated in him at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT-www.iit.ac.lk).
What has really placed IIT high up in his personal estimation is the opportunity that the Institute afforded him through their unique scholarship scheme. Suren had the distinction of being in the first such scholarship scheme introduced by IIT. The scheme was engineered in a manner that students were first placed at multinational and local blue chip companies and thereafter directed to part time degree on Friday evenings and the entirety of Saturday. The employer paid for the student employee’s education in return for which the student would gain employment, that was rewarding as well as offered a learning experience in itself. The employer on the other hand gained an employee dedicated and committed to their work, who is eager to learn and and improve themselves.
This experience enabled Suren to amass a practical work experience that enabled him to study even better, as he was able to apply practical knowledge to his theoretical one. However as Suren says, even full time students, through the third year placement period are able to achieve a similar if only shorter experience and are equally well equipped to face the industry at the end of their studies.
Suren says “IIT students have the capacity to work in a global environment and this is mostly due to the grounding received at the institute and the guidance they have received from lecturers who are experienced personnel from the industry. This has culminated in them being industry ready from the moment they are employed”
His final year project involved the automating of B2B purchases through a negotiation broker based on SOAP (XML) web-services that would scan through incoming purchase orders of corporate buyers again a catalog of corporate suppliers and match different rules (through its rules engine) stipulated by the buyer such as quality, price, delivery time, etc against suppliers’ abilities. The transaction will automatically function and be carried out on real time basis. The use of SOAP for communication enables integration across different platforms and uses an advance price negotiation engine to arrive at an optimal price.
The advanced knowledge applied whilst still a student as can be seen from his final year project has enabled Suren to achieve career growth in a short span of time. As CTO of Mazarin which is an IT solution Company based in Sri Lanka providing IT consulting, technology and outsourcing services, Suren is in charge of the overall operations. His duties involve looking into the outsourced software development, IT Consultancy for individuals and Companies on an International sphere, Software Caretaking, Web Development and Graphic Designing, Search Engine Optimization, Joint Product Development and other innovative product development fields.
