118 President’s Guides receive awards
At the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association’s Annual General Council Meeting held earlier this month, 118 Girl Guides from 8 provinces of the island received the President’s Guide Award. This prestigious award is the highest award that
can be achieved by a Girl Guide. Gracing the occasion was Chief Guest Hon. Bandula Gunawardane, Minister of Education and Guest of Honour Deshabandu Ms. Jezima Ismail.
Other notable awards presented on the day included the Award for the Best Performing Differently Abled Institution presented to Meth Mihira, Moratuwa, and the Little Friends Lend-a-Hand Challenge Shield presented to the 11th Colombo (VisakhaVidyalaya) Little Friends ‘A’ Pack. The latter was awarded for an ongoing project by the Little Friends who regularly visit and help the underprivileged M/O Godawila Junior School in Badalkumbura.
By saving pocket money and raising funds, the Little Friends have been able to donate library books and a
computer, build a roadway and playground for the school, and conduct a health camp for the
village of Badalkumbura.
A camping we will goAn indoor camp for differently abled Guides was held last month at the Sarvodaya Center
in Batticaloa to commemorate 95 years of Guiding in Sri Lanka. 126 campers attended the camp. This was the first camp of its kind to be held in the Eastern Province. Most of the differently abled Guides in the area are girls who were victims of the war.
