Dance to the music of ‘Black Velvet’

Popular band ‘Black Velvet’ led by singing husband and wife duo Yohan and Honorine, has come a long way. With more than two decades of experience behind them in the music field ‘Black Velvet’ has become one of the leading dance bands in the city.

They perform at Hilton, Cinnamon Lakeside lobbies on regular basis with gigs at most of the weekends.
‘We perform at many weddings, private parties and corporate functions in and out of Colombo along with dances. With the season approaching, we are getting more work and getting engaged all most all seven days’ said Yohan.

Apart from Sri Lankan engagements, ‘Black Velvet’ has performed in Australia, Seychelles, South Korea, Middle East, Maldives and India.

Along with Yohan and Honorine Fonseka the other members in the band include Ayesh Jayawardane – bass guitar/Vocals, Dylan Biyanwila – drums/Vocals, Udara Jayakody Keyboards / Vocals and Vasantha Fernando –guitar/ Vocals.
Ayesh Jayawardane is a youngest of the band and the youngest son of the well known musician Nihal Jayawardene, who was a former member of ‘Black Velvet’.

Ayesh started his music career as a keyboardist and played in several leading bands including his father’s band ‘Staccato’. They performed at a luxury hotel in Maldives during the past few years.

The Drummer Dylan Biyanwila has many years of experience in the field of music and performed as a frontline vocalist in several bands and has toured Europe and Maldives.

Talented Udara Jayakody, the keyboardist of the band had performed with ‘Staccato’ in Maldives for the past few years and Vasantha the lead guitarist has more than 15 years of experience behind him in the field of western music and has toured Europe and Maldives in the recent past.Black Velvet has a repertoire which includes covers from the 60’s to current songs as well as Sinhala, Hindi and Tamil.

‘We have several dances and weddings lined up for the rest of the year as well as for 2013, and are geared with entertaining dance music which cater to an audience of all ages’ Yohan sai.

Black Velvet will be in action at the Colombo Hilton on New Years Dinner Dance this year as they did in December last year.
