Cyril Fernando Memorial Oration on dengue

‘Dengue fever in adults: Evolution of the illness and the bedside challenge’ was the Dr. Cyril Fernando Memorial Oration given by Prof. Ranjan Premaratne, Professor in Medicine, University of Kelaniya during the sessions of the Ceylon College of Physicians at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo recently.

Musical evening  raises funds for Lady Ridgeway Hospital 

‘Suwasara Gee Miyasi’ a musical evening organised by the Friends of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital was held at the Musaeus College auditorium last Sunday as a fundraiser in the hospital’s drive to buy much needed advanced equipment and upgrade their Pediatric Dengue Treatment Centre. Several leading artistes performed at the event.

Fourth Citro Craft and Creations exhibition

Poorna Kularatne and her students of Citro Craft and Creations will hold their 4th exhibition of sewing and crafts ‘Citro Craft Exhibition 2012’ from October 12 to 14 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the J.R. Jayewardene Cultural Centre, Town Hall.
The exhibition will display a wide range of hand embroidered table cloths, framed pictures and cushions together with her latest creations including Iranian cutwork and paper quilling. A range of framed pictures will be on sale.

Dr. Azeez oration to be delivered by Dr. M.A.M. Shukri 

The Dr. A.M.A. Azeez oration will be held on October 4 at 4.30 p.m. at Ghaffoor Hall, Zahira College, Colombo 10. Dr. Azeez, a former principal of Zahira was the first Muslim civil servant, founder of the Young Men’s Muslim Association (YMMA) and the Ceylon Muslim Scholarship Fund.

Dr. M.A.M. Shukri, Director, Jenniya Naleemiah, Beruwala will deliver the oration on the subject ‘Relevance of Iqbalian philosophy to contemporary issues’. The meeting will be chaired by the President of the Dr. A.M.A. Azeez Foundation S.A.M. Jameel and National President of the YMMA K.N. Deen.

A reprint of the book ‘ Arabu Thamil Enkal Anbu Thamil’ by Dr. Azeez will be released. The event is open to all.

Legal Aid Clinic in Kalutara

The Law Students’ Association of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the UNDP, Equal Access to Justice project and the Legal Aid Commission of Sri Lanka, will hold a Legal Aid Clinic and Disability Law Awareness Programme in the Kalutara District on October 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kalutara District Secretariat Hall. The Disability Law Awareness Programme by Senarath Attanayake and Lasanthi Daskon will be from 9 to 10 a.m., while the Legal Aid Clinic for the general public will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Let’s talk about Kalumaali

The ‘Kalumaalification of Sri Lankan theatre’ – a discussion on Ruwanthi de Chickera’s recent play Kalumaali will be held on Wednesday, October 3 at 5 p.m. at the Centre for Poverty Analysis, 29, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7. It is open to all who would like to share their thoughts on the play and broader issues that the play brings up with regard to motherhood and parenting etc.
It is intended to extend the discussion on theatre and theatre-making beyond the stage.

Event to mark Japanese spiritual day

Classical and jazz combine

Music lovers in Sri Lanka are in for an uncommon experience – a night of classical music together with a blend of jazz at ‘Shining Brass’, a concert by Norway’s veteran ‘ The 3 Trumpets’ featuring Petter Dillevig, Trond Olav Ruistuen and Arne Kollandsrud.
The Norwegian trio will perform in collaboration with the Colombo Brass Ensemble comprising Naveen Fernando, Kalum Nishyantha, Saman Kularathne, Nishantha Premalal and Thilak Thantrige on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m. at the British School Auditorium in Colombo. Entrance is free of charge. Reservations can be made by calling 0772375584.
The concert is presented by the Norwegian Embassy, Concerts Norway, and the Sewalanka Foundation together with Aru Sri Art Theater.

The 3 Trumpets will also collaborate with the National Youth Orchestra for their 20th anniversary performance as well as perform a series of concerts and workshops for children and youth in both Colombo and Trincomalee together with a one day master class for a group of Sri Lanka’s leading wind instrument players.

Art exhibition

‘We are the world’ an exhibition of paintings by the students of  Saumya Jayasekera is on today, and tomorrow, at the Lionel Wendt gallery. The young artists aged 5-11, are holding their exhibition in celebration of Children’s Day which falls on October 1.

Launch of Vol 2 of Judge Weeramantry’s memoirs

The second volume of the Memoirs of Judge C.G Weeramantry ‘Towards One World: Vol 2, The Australian Years’ is to be ceremonially launched at Monash University by the Vice-Chancellor of Monash, Professor Ed Byrne tomorrow October 1.
The first volume, released last year, dealt with the Sri Lankan years of the Judge’s work and the second volume deals with the work done by him in Australia during his years at Monash. The book will be available in Colombo bookshops from Thursday.
