White sails in the sunset set off flowing resortwear
View(s):The setting was magical – a blue lagoon, a soft breeze, a glowing sky providing an exquisite backdrop for the first Colombo Fashion Week Resortwear show at Jetwing Lagoon in Talahena last Saturday, September 22. The show featured 12 local and international designers from south and southeast Asia presenting their 2013 resortwear collections to a select group of invitees who collected on the lawn at the edge of the lagoon, facing a long runway and the white sails of fishing boats that were used as screens for shifting images.

Veterans such as Bibi Russell from Bangladesh, Yolanda Aluwihare from Sri Lanka and Rizwan Beyg from Pakistan and newer designers such as Sonali Dharmawardhena, Upeksha and Gihan Ediriweera from Sri Lanka displayed trendy, bright and happy collections aimed at the beach as well as clothes for lounging by the pool and evenings of glamour. Batik and tie and dye in cotton and silk were used for bright beach wraps and bikinis while the men were just as colourful in checked shirts and shorts. The models danced and swayed their way along the ramp to the lively music.
In keeping with the resortwear theme, the clothes were mostly flowing and loose, comfortable to wear and easy to maintain although no show would be complete without the wild and wacky that in this case included sequined bikinis, towering headgear and Red Indian-themed shirts.
CFW President Ajai Singh said Sri Lanka was ideally placed to be a hub for resortwear in the region. Designers could sell their collections at hotels and shops around the country.
“With this show we set the path for Sri Lanka being the hub for resortwear collections, in this region. There were challenges, but the vision to lift Sri Lanka’s fashion design industry kept us focused on new opportunities that will stretch our designers to expand their skill-set to match the best. By God’s grace all came together, the setting, designers, the standard and the quality. The standard is improving,” he said, reflecting on the show.
The Sunday Times, Daily Mirror and Financial Times were the media sponsors of the event.
