Dominating TT performance by University of Moratuwa
View(s):The Inter University Table Tennis arena burst to life on August 18 as University of Moratuwa (UOM) Men’s team cruised to victory to win the Inter University Table Tennis Championship 2012 organized by University of Sabaragamuwa.
University of Moratuwa started their campaign by defeating University of Kelaniya (UOK) 3-0 in the opening group stage match and went on to beat University of Wayamba 3-0 to top their group. UOM continued to show their dominance in the arena as they beat University of Rajarata 3-0 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals UOM advanced to the finals beating University of Sri Jayawardanapura 3-1. This was the only time that UOM lost a single match in the tournament.
University of Moratuwa (UOM) met University of Colombo (UOC) the defending champions in the final. The enthralling final began with N.S.K Wickramanayake (UOM) winning the first singles at 3-0 to put UOM in the lead.
The second single was between Samuditha Ishan (UOM) and Sahanaka Ganegoda (UOC) both of them are considered as the best players in their respective universities. The match was breathtaking to say the least and the crowd cheered both players for their outstanding performances. At the end Samuditha took the match at 3-2 to give UOM a further lead. Dulan Nakandala (UOM) won the third single 3-0 as UOM clinched the Inter University Table Tennis Championship 2012.
Suneth Mendis the skipper of UOM shared his thoughts after the victory, “It was nothing but team effort and dedication of all the players. I wish to thank Mr. K.R.D.C. Rathnamudali, Director of Physical education of University of Moratuwa and Mr. G.L. Wijesuriya, In-charge of Table Tennis for their guidance and the encouragement given”.
