England crushed India comfortably by 9 wickets in a Group A match to remain as one of the hot contenders to lift the ICC Women’s T20 WC 2012 at Galle yesterday. India who chose to bat made 116 for the loss of six wickets and England raced to reach the winning target losing just a wicket with 17 balls remaining.

England skipper Charlotte Edwards contributed with a brilliant and unbeaten knock to hand India their worst defeat in the tournament, as she went on to hit 50 not out from 53 balls inclusive of six well timed boundaries. Chasing what seemed to be an easy target with the calibre of batters they possess, England got off to a flying start with openers Edwards and Laura Marsh putting on 78 runs in just 11.4 overs. England lost Marsh after she brilliantly stumped by Indian wicketkeeper Sulakshana Naik off leg-spinner Reema Malhotra for 39. Marsh made 39 from 35 balls hitting five fours and the solitary six of the game but her dismissal had very little effect on England’s obvious win. Edwards continued her dominance and went on to form an unbroken 40-run partnership with Sarah Taylor for the second wicket as England reached their winning target easily. Taylor was unbeaten on 25 from just 15 deliveries with four boundaries.

India who suffered their second consecutive loss, made a poor start when they opted to bat first, losing opener Amita Sharma at 4. But Poonam Raut and skipper Mithali Raj added 75 runs for the second wicket to help them recover and post a respectable 116 for the loss of six wickets. Raut made 51 off 57 balls with six fours while Raj made 35 off 38 with two fours as India failed to continue the momentum after losing both batters in the 16th over. Marsh who bowled economically finished with figures of 2 for 22.

India 116 for 6 wickets (20) (Poonam Raut 51, Mithali Raj 35, Jhulan Goswami 10; Laura Marsh 2/22, Arran Brindle 1/6, Katherine Brunt 1/16, Holly Colvin 1/30)
England 118 for 1 wicket (17.1) (Charlotte Edwards 50, Laura Marsh 39, Sarah Taylor 25n.o; Reema Malhotra 1/23)
