Gutsy Lankans to participate at Mumbai Sevens
Two tournaments one with Bowl and the other with Plate Lankan ruggerites will take wing to India to take part in the HSBC Asian Series Sevens rugby tournament in two weeks time. The tournament will take place in Mumbai on 13 and 14 of October.
Sri Lanka will be playing in the Group B along with China, Malaysia and Iran. A qualification up to a Cup Quarter final berth will give a good edge for the locals to get the nod to participate at the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens 2013 where 5 of the top Asian Teams will be invited for this tournament which is 36 years old.
Sri Lankan outfit led by Srinarth Sooriyabandara won the Bowl at Borneo Sevens which was a repeat of last year where Sri Lanka won the Bowl under the leadership of Yoshitha Rajapakse. In the last tournament in Shanghai the Lankans won the Plate under the leadership of Fazil Marija.
The selected 37 players for the pool will resume practices soon after the completion of the Clifford Cup Knock out rugby tournament which is currently underway. The national selectors may add a few players after the completion of the knock out tournament.
Currently in the HSBC Asian Sevens series Sri Lanka are on equal points with UAE and stand on 7th position over all after the two tournaments in Borneo and Shanghai.
The following are the groupings
Group A- Japan, Philippines, Singapore and Afghanistan
Group B- China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Iran
