Lanka Lions to host ‘Sanga, Murali and Arnold in Singapore
The Lanka Lions Cricket Club, fresh from being crowned Division 1 Champions of the Singapore Cricket League for the fifth year in-a-row, will be hosting cricket legends Kumar Sangakkara (recently crowned ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year for 2012, and the recipient of the Peoples’ Choice prize for the second consecutive year), Muttiah Muralitharan and Russell Arnold as well as the ‘Unity Squad’, to Singapore for a series of events to be held on the weekend of October 13-14 to raise awareness about the activities of the Foundation of Goodness which is a charity spearheaded by Muttiah Muralitharan.
The Foundation of Goodness recently augmented the Murali Harmony Cup 2012 T-20 Tournament which was held between September 7 and 12 as a pre-cursor to the ICC T-20 World Cup 2012.
The Murali Harmony Cup hosted 20 school boy teams of the under-19 age group and eight women’s club teams of the under-23 age group with a vision of bringing communities together while developing cricket in rural Sri Lanka, which is in line with the Lanka Lions’ own vision of ‘bringing communities together through sport’. All matches were played at five post-conflict school venues across Sri Lanka’s northern regions of Mankulam, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Mullativu.
The 14 best players from the tournament, hand-picked by current international stars of Sri Lanka Cricket, will travel to Singapore as the ‘Unity Squad’ and play two exhibition T-20 games against the Lanka Lions and the Singapore Cricket Club. The match against the Lanka Lions is scheduled to begin at 2pm on October 14 at the Indian Association Grounds on Balestier Road and is open to the public.
Following the match, the Lanka Lions will host Kumar Sangakkara and Russell Arnold in a private chat-show type Q&A session from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on October 14, 2012 to raise funds for the Foundation of Goodness in support of the fantastic work the Foundation is doing in Sri Lanka. Entry to this event will be limited to 75 people and is by donation only (minimum S$50 per person), where all proceeds will be directed to the Foundation. Donors are welcome to participate in photograph and autograph opportunities with Kumar and Russell. Light refreshments will also be provided.
