Lanka to host World Carrom C’ships in October
View(s):Sri Lanka who will host the 6th World Carrom Championship 2012 in Sri Lanka at Galadari Hotel, Colombo has selected two teams with the aim of defending their title in October.
Accordingly the men’s team will be led by national champion Nishantha Fernando while Joseph Roshita has been appointed as the women’s team captain.
The men’s team include Chamil Cooray, Mohamed Sherifdeen, Dimal Senaratne and Ajith Chandrasoma while Madushika Kanchanamala, Yashika Rahubadda, Chalani Lakmali and Arosha Wickremasinghe will represent Sri Lanka in the women’s team.
According to the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL), the national pools will commence practices in the coming days under the guidance of their coach Langley Mathiasz. In addition the CFSL also has been pressurised with a gigantic task of raising Rs.7 million to host this event as 16 countries and over 120 players and officials have already confirmed their participation for this World Cup.
“We have received Rs.2 million from the Ministry of Sports and we have the onus of finding the balance Rs.5 million which is an uphill task for a sports governing body that are not so rich,” the CFSL stated in a media release.
Among the participating countries for the 6th World Carrom Championship 2012 are hosts Sri Lanka, India, UK, Spain, Malaysia, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Maldives, Germany, Netherlands, Korea, Pakistan, France, Poland, Singapore, Switzerland, USA, Dubai, Nepal, Bangladesh, Czech Republic, Canada and Poland.
