Wesley paddlers impress at Kotte
View(s):Wesley College paddlers impressed at the Invited Schools Table Tennis Tournament 2012 organised by the Ananda Sastralaya Kotte by clinching the Under-16 title and emerging runners-up in the Under-12 category.
Wesley made a clean sweep in the Under-16 age category final, beating St. Peter’s 3-nil. In the first round up and coming table tennis prodigy Lithmina Mahanama thrashed Shamin Fernando comfortably by two straight sets 11/1 and 11/5 to give Wesley an early lead. In the second round Senal Dahanayaka had a close shave when he bounced back to beat Hishan Madusanka by 2-1 in a hard-fought game. Dahanayaka won the first set easily by 11/8 but Madusanka returned to level the set with a stunning 12/10 comeback win.
Though Wesley had assured the title by the end of the second set, the third set went right down to the wire with Matheesha Wijeratne producing a sterling performance to seal a convincing 2-1 win for his team. Wijeratne had a close battle against Amal Weeratunga to clinch the first round by 11/8 but went down in the second round by 12/10 after a the Peterite came out with full force. But Wijeratne ensured Wesley walk out as undisputed winners with a clean record from the competition by winning the third round by 11/6 to claim the game.
During the league stage Wesley maintained an unbeaten record by winning their games. The Wesleyites beat D.S.Senanayake College, St. Peter’s, hosts Ananda Sastralaya and St. John’s Nugegoda identically by five sets to nothing.
In the Under-12 age group, Wesley went down to Royal College in the final by 3-nil. Royal who beat Ananda Sastralaya by 5-nil in the league stage also handed Wesley a 4-1 defeat before entering the final. Wesley in the meantime recorded their only win in the league stage against Ananda Sastralaya by 5-nil as they repeatedly lost to Royal in the league and final. Meanwhile St. Peter’s beat Nalanda College to win the Under-14 title by 3-1 after recording a hard fought 3-2 win against Vidura College in the league stage. Finalists Nalanda qualified for the final after beating St. John’s and Dharmapala Pannipitiya. – NA
