The Monster

Story

Roy was walking down a lonely footpath. It was getting dark and he felt a little scared. Suddenly he heard a sound. He felt like someone was following him. He quickened his steps. Someone was following him for sure. He could hear someone getting closer and closer. Finally he decided to turn back and look. But as soon as he turned, he regretted doing so. Standing a few yards away from him was an ugly, scary looking Monster.

Now, Roy had never seen a Monster before. So he didn’t know how to react. He didn’t know if he should stay or run. This was an ugly Monster. He had red eyes and a huge mouth. His stomach looked like a potato sack. The Monster picked up a toffee wrapper that Roy threw away a little while ago and swallowed it. As soon as he gulped it he grew a couple of inches taller.
“Who…what are you?” Roy asked taking a step back and getting ready to run. “Don’t you recognize me?” asked the Monster.
“I am the Monster you created!” “I never created a Monster!” Roy said sounding very surprised. No, he never made a
monster in his hand-work class or even while playing with clay. He was pretty sure!

The Monster looked at Roy’s confused face and laughed. “Bwaha…ha…ha…” he came a step closer. “Take a good look
at me and you will remember!” Roy took a good look. The Monster’s mouth was big and his teeth looked like plastic forks. The type they gave free with take-away meals. His hands were made of disposable plastic cups. And his fingers were
plastic spoons. His huge stomach was made of multi-coloured polythene bags. And his eyes were the scariest. They were shiny and red.

“Wait a minute!” said Roy after taking a good look at the Monster’s eyes. They were made of Roy’s favourite chocolate
wrappers. “You recognized them!” said the Monster. “Those are the chocolate wrappers I threw away. And everything else on you are things that I threw away!” “And where did you throw them?” asked the Monster. Roy remembered going to the beach a few days back. He took with him a picnic basket full of goodies. He could identify some of those wrappers on the Monster. “I threw some of them on the shore, some under a tree and some on the road… I can’t really remember!” replied Roy.
“Well, that’s how you created me!” said the Monster. “All the garbage you threw here and there got collected and I was born!” “But there was already garbage thrown all over those places. I was not the only one who littered!” Roy said as an excuse. “No, you were not the only one. Everyone who throws garbage all over creates Monsters. There are lots of Monsters like me! But I am your Monster. Now I will have to live with you!” “No!” shouted Roy.

“I don’t want to take home a hideous Monster like you. Go away!” “But you created me!” said the Monster.
“Now I’ll have to stay with you and do all kinds of horrible things!” “Like what?” asked Roy shivering in fright. “Well for starters,
I will start breeding harmful insects and spreading germs.

I will make sure that everyone falls sick. Then in the long run, I will block the water-ways, pollute soil, kill plants and
animals and ruin the whole world!” “What a horrible thing to do. You are a mean Monster!” shouted Roy. “Bwaha…ha…ha…” laughed the Monster. “Well, too bad. You created me!”

Roy remembered how he carelessly threw food wrappers, plastic and polythene all over. He always thought it was alright because others also did the same. But now he could see how much damage one person alone could do. “I created this, so I will have to stop this!” he thought to himself. Roy started to run home and the Monster followed him. He took a big grey garbage bag and started to collect sweet wrappers and other non-degradable stuff around his garden.

Then he started cleaning his lane. The Monster looked scared and started moving away from Roy spilling polythene and plastic pieces. Roy collected them as well. The Monster started to run away spilling bits and pieces off his body. Roy ran after him collecting them in his big bag. The Monster started getting smaller and smaller. Soon he was no bigger than a plastic cup. Roy picked him and put him in the bag and tied a knot.

“I am taking you to the recycling center. Whatever that cannot be recycled will be sent away in the garbage truck!” Roy said. “And I promise you, that you will never follow me again. I will never throw garbage all over. And whenever I go on trips I will always take a bag to collect everything I need to throw away. And then I will dispose of itproperly!”
“Boo…hoo…hoo,” the Monster cried from the garbage bag.

“If everyone thought that way, there won’t be any more garbage Monsters to cause harm!”
