Our next step will depend on B’desh Govt’s action against offenders: Bodu Bala Senawa head
Bodu Bala Senawa Chairman Ven. Kirama Wimalajothi Thera said the Bangladesh High Commission has intimated that the petition handed over during the protest, condemning the attacks against Buddhist temples in the coastal region of Cox’s Bazaar, has been given to the Bangladesh Government.
Ven. Wimalajothi Thera said depending on the Bangladesh Government’s action against those behind the violence and ensuring that such attacks would not occur, the organization will decide on its next step.The Thera advises the Lankan community there to avoid clashing with extremist groups.
Last week, hundreds of Buddhist monks, from here and a number of Asian countries gathered in front of the Bangladesh High Commission in Ward Place, Colombo 7 in protest at the alleged attacks on Buddhist temples and communities in Chittagong and the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh by extremist groups.
Among the monks were those from Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Malaysia.
The protest resulted in a tense situation with stones and water bottles being hurled at the High Commission premises.
The protestors claimed that during the violence over the last several days, several monks were assaulted, 19 Buddhist temples and pagodas destroyed while hundreds of Buddhist houses had been vandalized. The External Affairs Ministry stated that there was no security threat to the Lankan community and students in Chittagong.
The Ministry advised the Lankan community to be cautious and refrain from travelling during the night.
