View(s):

Claude Debussy, one of the most famous French composers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is perhaps known for his Clair de lune and the symphonic poem La Mer. The Alliance française de Kandy celebrates the 150th birthday of Claude Debussy with ‘Debussy, Music and the Arts’ an exhibition to be held from October 12 to 22.

The chief guest at the opening ceremony, on the 12th at 6.30 pm, will be Cultural and Cooperation Counsellor, Embassy of France Michel Treutenaere.

Claude Debussy developed a strongly individual style and went against the methods of classical composing by using uncommon arrangements that created a new language of sound. This exhibition focuses on Debussy’s relationships with fin de siècle art, Japonisme, Impressionism, Symbolism, and other currents in the arts.

A selected group of art students, from different schools of the district, will participate in the art workshops and the students’ exhibition will be inaugurated on October 16 at 6 pm. On Friday 19 at 6.30 pm, an evening of poetry and music will be presented by teachers and students with the participation of the pianist Bridget Halpé.
