Today is your last chance to sample the culinary delights of the Hawker Street at the World Spice Food Festival. The event, held annually since 2005, has local hotels competing to bring down interesting chefs from all over the world. While dining out at one of the upscale restaurants might not suit everyone’s budget, the Hawker Street at the Board Walk in Battaramulla offers a smorgasbord of dishes – a chance to taste a little bit of everything.

All aboard: The chefs from around the world at the launch of the festival at Mount Lavinia Hotel on Thursday

Food stalls, each with its own international theme cuisine, live music, cultural performances, cookery demonstrations and cooking competitions such as Batticaloa Prawn curry (Colombo Culinary Challenge) and Kottu Championship competitions are among the highlights.

The event, which has been organised by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, began with the launch at the Mount Lavinia hotel on October 4 and was followed up by the opening of the Hawker’s Street Food Promotion over the weekend. For the rest of the week (up to October 14) participating hotels and restaurants and their signature chefs will continue to offer guests that chance to savour chosen specialities from a range of different cuisines at their hotels and at designated stand-alone restaurants in Colombo.

Local hotels have put in an enthusiastic showing – 11 top city hotels and 5 speciality restaurants are involved with the festival and among them have flown down 12 master chefs specifically for the event.

According to the organisers the Hilton Colombo will be serving up Chinese food, Cinnamon Lakeside has chosen to go with Vietnamese, Cinnamon Grand will specialise in Pakistani food, Grand Oriental Hotel and the Galle Face Hotel’s chefs are from Singapore, the Galadari Hotel opted for Egyptian food while the Hilton Residencies decided to go with Malaysian. The Mount Lavinia Hotel’s chef will be cooking Creole/Cajun cusine, the Ramada Colombo and the Mango Tree will be competing to see who can serve up the best North-Indian. The Taj Samudra is serving Australian cuisine, Waters Edge is serving Japanese while Siam House and Jack Tree have both chosen to stick with Thai dishes. Local restaurant The Sizzle will offer items from their menu which leaves Raja Bojun serving Sri Lankan food.
The Festival is supported by HSBC, MA’S Tropical Food Products, Elephant House, Lion Breweries, and Global Brands.
