Punchi Theatre celebrates nine years in the best way it knows
The Punchi Theatre, founded by two well-known thespians, Namel and Malini Weeramuni is celebrating its 9th anniversary on October 23. What better way to celebrate than to go on stage? The drama festival begins on October 8 and will run till the 31st, with some of the best Sinhala stage plays going on the boards.
Three events are planned for the day of the anniversary: Namel Weeramuni’s drama ‘Madyawediyekuge Asipatha’ (the sword of a journalist) will be staged. There will be the art exhibition of 300 paintings done by the students of their art academy which will take place from 10a.m. till 5p.m. The book ‘Madyawediyekuge Asipatha’ will also be launched.
‘Madyawediyekuge Asipatha’ revolves around a journalist who is being followed and harassed by a politician whose misdeeds she has revealed to the public. Even after the deaths of her family, she remains steadfast showing the necessity and the ability of a journalist to reveal the truth. Her story is told through music, dance and also humour.
