The 86th Men’s and Women’s Clifford Cup Boxing Championship conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABA) which concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium saw MAS Holdings for the first time in the history sweeping the board in both the categories.

Slimline BC one of the foremost boxing clubs in Sri Lank clinching the men’s title after a lapse of six years while it’s sister company MAS Southern BC clinched the women’s title.The five day championship saw the participation of a large number of pugilists comprising 142 in the men’s category and 43 from the women’s category representing 21 clubs around the island mainly from the three forces Army who were the defending champions, Navy, Air Force, Police, Slimline BC, Linea BC, MAS Siluetta, Unichela BC, Vidyartha, and Vidyaratahana BC in quest for the Clifford Cup title. According to sources the organizers had to extend the championship by a day which was previously held over four days.

Slimline BC in clinching the title had six winners out of seven who entered the finals from the ten bouts that were conducted while securing 24 points. Defending champions Army was able to muster only two wins to take the second slot while Air Force and Police a bout each. In the women’s MAS Southern emulated their male counterparts by winning six bouts with Army and Police winning one each.

The Best Men Boxer award was won by Dilshan of Sri Lanka Air Force after a stunning knock out to 2012 Clifford Cup best boxer winner S.N. Heelbathdiniya of Slimline in the second round of the light welterweight bout while W.A.C.I. Perera of the Army was adjudged the best loser after a fierce fight with the winner of the light fly weight category M.R. Sandaruwan of Slimline BC semi finals. The best boxer in the women’s category was won by 2010 Sri Lanka representative at the Asian Games Niranjala Senanayake and Best Loser Women’s award was won by H.S. Priyangi who was beaten by the Asian Championship Gold medalist in 2005.-
