Tendulkar ponders retirement

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has admitted that he is considering retiring from the game and that he will reassess his future next month.

The 39-year-old batting star said in an interview with an Indian television station on Friday that he would decide his future based on a “series by series” basis.

“I am 39 and I don’t think I have plenty of cricket left in me,” he told the Times Now station.

“I am 39 plus and it is not abnormal for me to think of it. At that moment, I will go by what my heart says. At this moment, my heart says I am okay. But you will have to look at series by series.”

The idea of dropping Tendulkar has been taboo in India, but some commentators suggested during the recent home series against New Zealand – when he made a series of low scores – that the time has come for him to hang up his boots.

Tendulkar, the first batsman to score 100 international centuries, has now gone 25 innings without a Test century since making 146 during India’s last series in South Africa in January 2011.

Nevertheless, he expects to be playing when England visit India for four Tests in November and December.

“I need not take a (retirement) call right now. When I play in November, I will reassess things,” he added.

“I am still the best judge of what happens to my mind and body. When I feel it is time, I will take a call,” international cricket’s leading run-scorer continued.

“It is going to be a tough call nevertheless. It is going to be tough because this is what I have been doing all my life. It is going to be difficult to suddenly hang (up) my boots one day.”
