Matara Shariputhra, the wining School in Sri Lanka
Shariputhra Secondary School located in Pamburanaarea, is a highly venerated educational institution. It has an unblemished record of producing great persons to mother Sri Lanka since its inception in 1927. At present it is a secondary school and is one of the leading schools in the Matara district. It has a proud record of 85 years.
Venerable rev. Sitinamaluwe Dhammajothi Thero who lived in Pamburana village had taken a great effort to establish Shariputhra Vidyalaya. They succeeded in the task in 1927 to start Matara Shariputhra Vidyalaya in
Pinwatta.
Being the first members of the staff Mr. N.T.M. De Silva, Mrs. Alcy Weerarathna Jayasuriya and Mrs.N.Kahakachchi had done a priceless service towards the progress of the school. Dedication and commitment of these teachers helped to increase the number of students from 61 to 228.TThe year 1968
marked an important milestone in the history of Pamburana Shariputhra Vidyalaya Through many hardships the school earned the Maha Vidyalaya status. Owing to the dedicated commitment and enthusiasm of the past principals the school developed into a prestigious institution.
The school currently has a student population of over 2000 students with classes ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 13. Every year several students enter the university. The school has a well-equipped computer lab, library and laboratories as well as volleyball court and a cricket ground as well.
Presently with over 2000 students, 92 teachers and another 7 to support the staff, the school is striding towards success. Shariputhra College has classes from Grade 1 to Grade 13. All grades conduct classes in the Sinhala medium. Advance Level classes are conducted Bioscience, Physical Science, Commerce and Arts streams.The history of Shariputhra has opened a new page after the arrival of the present principal Mrs. G.G. Dulani Kamal Renuka. The newly appointed principal assumed her duties in 2011. During this period she has faced many challenges but through her vision and effort, she has succeeded in overcoming all obstacles. The principal with the assistance of Deputy Principal manages the entire school through the delegation of powers to different sectional heads. Buildings have been constructed during this era and the school playground has also been constructed.Despite those facilities a new
concept has been introduced to the students and it is now called the “Sleepless school” (Nonidena Pasala). The students continue studying from 5.00 am to 7.00 pm. Through this novel concept the school as attained the highest dedication and has obtained the highest standards of excellence.
Recognizing the necessity of future demands English medium classes have been started from Grade 6. By adding more subjects to the Arts stream the students of A/L classes have more opportunities to study.
In the face of competitive exams, sports and other co- curricular activities, the school has emerged victorious overwhelming other leading schools. The 2012 Grade 5 scholarship examination has shown their outstanding performances. Twenty students got through the examination scoring the highest number of marks while G. Shehara Sewwandi Ariyasinghe obtained 183 marks.
Moreover the students have performed a science drama and they won the all island achievement in 2012. The students have shown their outstanding performances equally on the sports field at the Provincial level. The students have achieved Divisional and Zonal achievements in English drama competitions as well. Excluding those performances the students of Shariputhra have shown their talents in the Sinhala Day competitions and all island Art competitions as well.
“Bestowing an education for the fulfillment of the national and educational goals for the life that aims at the formation of integrated persons with rounded personalities, trained to be responsible, independent, creative, peaceful, environmental friendly, consisted of human qualities, can confront almost all the challenges which come across in future success” is the mission of the school.
