The Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka saw a new council being appointed in July 2012. The new council, led by President re-elect Air Vice Marshall Rohitha Ranasinghe (Retd.), has proposed a new direction for the IPM to achieve the highest standards in HR management in Sri Lanka.

Speaking on the new plans in store for the IPM, AVM RohithaRanasinghe emphasized the importance of the new role of the HR managers in today’s businesses and the essential role of the HR manager in the boardroom at the management level. And elaborating on the new vision for the IPM with the view of HRM requirements of the globalised business world, the President went on to explain that the new focus of the IPM should essentially be targeted at producing HRM professionals who are capable of taking up the challenge of the new era in businesses.

The new directions of the IPM will mostly be focused on the course content it provides and the IPM plans to provide professional training and top level professional qualifications for the HR managers, targeting the executive and management level. This will enable the future HR managers of the country to play that crucial role in the success of the businesses by playing an active part as members of the top management. The IPM will be introducing new module type courses that will cover essential business subject areas such as reward management, talent management, organization development, HRIS and strategic HR management, apart from the general HR related modules. The new course content will target HR professionals in the executive and management levels and will give them that edge that is required in contributing towards the business at a higher level.

AVM RohithaRanasignhe also pointed out that in current businesses competing in the global economy HR plays a decisive role and therefore it is essential that an institute such as the IPM, the leading and the most recognized institute providing professional training in HRM, transforms itself to provide its students and affiliates that extra competence needed in getting their foot in the boardroom door and also providing the business with a new perspective in people management essential in competing in the globalised business environment.

The other aspect of new HRM that the IPM is focusing on is providing that key identity for the HR Professionals to be part of the management that is leading the businesses, and thereby being a strategic partner of the company. This will be achieved through the new certification process forHR professionals, who are currently meeting the criteria. IPM being the only State approved institute established to represent HR progression in Sri Lanka, is the ideal body to provide an endorsement of this nature which will be recognized by employers. Through this certification process the IPM also intent to set higher standards in the industry and assuring employers of highly skilled HR Managers.
