Spellmaster moves to the Central Province
View(s):The all island schools spelling competition “Spellmaster” which is now one of the most popular education programmes amongst all ages, switched focus to the Central Province of Sri Lanka last weekend.
330 students from the province competed in the pre quarter final where four competitions were conducted in Kandy to select 54 spellers who would move into the quarter finals, where 500 top spellers in the country will be competing for the title of the Spellmaster.
This year, a majority of the schools did extremely well, where almost 15 to 19 students of the 20 who sat for the preliminary round dictation test qualified to the pre quarter finals. From the Kandy district, Mahamaya Girls’ College and Girls’ High School Kandy did amazingly well with all 20 contestants passing the dictation test and qualifying into the quarter finals. Other schools from the district that did well were, Lexicon Internati-onal School, Badi-Ud-Din Mahmud Girls’ College, and Hillwood College Kandy and Amina Girls’ National School from the Matale district. Finally from the Nuwara Eliya district, Highlands’ College Hatton and Holy Trinity Central College took up the majority of the places to the quarter finals from that district.
The contestants from these three districts were geared and ready to battle it out for the 54 seats remaining to the semi finals which are to be held in Colombo, every student who came could be seen with a dictionary in hand and constantly referring it for new words in the hope that they’ll get through.
Watch next Sunday’s episode of Spellmaster on Sirasa TV at 6 pm to see which students from the Western Province qualified into the next stage of this exciting competition.
