Attractive concessions and an open sky policy will be offered to those opting to make use of the multi-billion-rupee Mattala international airport scheduled to begin operations early next year, Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratna said yesterday.

He said that an open skies policy with liberalised laws would be followed for two years for airlines making use of Sri Lanka’s second international airport in the Hambantota District while concessions would be offered for cargo handling and a 50 per cent discount given on ground handling charges.

He said the aim was to attract more flights until the airport was made popular.Mr. Jayaratne said 85 per cent of the airport had been completed and they were hoping that the runway would be ready by December.

The Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka entered into an agreement with China Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd for the construction of the airport at a cost of US$ 209 million (Rs. 27.2 billion). The project is financed by the EXIM Bank of China under a concessionary loan of US$ 190 million. (Rs. 24.7 billion.)
