Anula Vidyalaya clinch U-10 TT C’ship
View(s):Anula Vidyalaya clinched the Under-10 ‘C’ Division team championship at the All-Island Schools Junior Table Tennis tournament held at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Complex in Mt. Lavinia last weekend.
The Anula Vidyalaya team remained unbeaten throughout the competition on their way to grab the table tennis plum and they are awaiting a deserving promotion in the coming season.
Anula paddlers beat Dharmasoka Ambalangoda ‘A’, Royal Institute ‘A’, Karandeniya Central ‘A’ and Bishop’s College comprehensively. They won all four of their group games by 3 sets to nil and carried on with their form to drub Anuladevi Vidyalaya Galle by the same margin in the quarterfinal stage.
From the semi-final stage Anula paddlers had to face tough opponents. They fought hard against St. Anthony’s Girls School to record a thrilling 3-2 win in the semi-final stage to qualify for the final. The final too was well contested but eventually Anula Vidyalaya managed to beat St. Mary’s Convent ‘A’ by 3-2 to claim the Division ‘C’ championship.
The team is captained by Hasara Edirisinghe and Dewma Edirisinghe, Suhansa Hannagala, Nishadi Kaduwela and Senaya Jayasooriya are the other members of the side. Former national table tennis coach Jothipala Samaraweera coaches the team with the assistance of Gayan Dipula. The team is well motivated by its teacher-in-charge Asoka Kularathne and the principal Kalyani Gunasekara who is keen on sports activities. – NA
