Defending champions Royal unbeaten
Defending champions Royal College produced a brilliant performance to win three of their matches on the first day of the 11th Blue and Gold Hockey Sevens held at Royal College Hockey grounds yesterday.
Royal, vying for a hat-trick after winning the trophy in the last two consecutive years, won against Mahinda College Galle (4-0), Sri Dharmaloka College Keleniya (3-0), D.S. Senanayake College (1-0) and drew with Zahira College, Matale (0-0) to top in the Group A.
Tanwir Hallaj opened the scoring for Royal in the third minute of their first match against Mahinda College, while skipper Shahid Kuthubdeen, Shahid Ahamed, and Danuja Gunasekara scored one goal each for the team. In their second game for the day, Royal scored thrice against Sri Dharmaloka College through skipper Shahin Ahamed and Shahid Kuthubdeen (2) to stamp their authority early on in the tournament.
The final stages of the tournament will be held today with boys and girls will compete in the Cup, Plate and Bowl categories. Royal will play in the per-quarter final against Christ Church Matale.
In other boys’ matches, Maris Stella College, Negombo won against Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa by a solitary goal and beat Kingswood College, Kandy by a similar margin to lead Group B. Christ Church College Matale defeated S. Thomas College, Mt. Lavinia by 4 goals to nil in a group C match, while Nalanda College beat St. Peters College (3-0), Asoka Vidayala (3-0), and Sri Sumangala College, Panadura (3-1) in group D.
In the girls’ category, defending champions Pushpadana College Kandy beat Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya by 6 goals to one and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya by a solitary goal to top its group. Sangamitta College, Matale recorded the highest goals in a match in this year’s tournament so far, smashing Uva Science by 9 goals to nil.
The tournament, sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka and organised by Royal College Hockey Club, saw the participation of 55 teams in both girls and boys category.
