Thirteen new records established
Thirteen new records were established as Western Province won the 2012 All Island Schools Athletics Championship at the D.A. Rajapaksa Stadium with 874 points yesterday. Central Province emerged runners up with 612 points.
A.D.A. Fernando of Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa was adjudged the best male athlete of the meet for his performance of 7.43 meters in the Long Jump event while S.R.J.P. Senanayake of St. Joseph’s BMV Kegalle won the best female athlete’s award for her record breaking performance of 12.30 seconds in the 100 meters. 124 events for girls and boys in age groups of Under-15, 17, 19 and 21 were worked off during the past five days with the participation of 2649 athletes from all nine provinces.
Tharindu Madushan of Lunuwatta Central College won the 21.098 kilometer half marathon in the boys Under-19 category which was the first event of the day. He recorded one hour 13 minutes and 53 seconds to finish the event. Tharindu who led the marathon from the start also established a new schools record in the 5000 meter event on Thursday.
Maheshika Madushani of Polpithigama National School won the half marathon for girl’s Under-19 category with a time of one hour 27 minutes and fifty five seconds. She also won the 1500 meter event yesterday. Milina Kumari Senevirathna of Sri Rahula NS who holds the record for the event with a time of one hour 21 minutes and 18 seconds also established a new mark in the 5000 M in the girl’s Under-21 yesterday.

Pole Vault U-17 Girls: Harshani Samudra Kumari of A. Ratnayaka Central College Walala with a height of 3.0 meters (Record held by Anne Piumali of St. Anne’s BMV Wattala, 2.65M, in 2007)
5000m U-19 Boys: Tharindu Madushan of Loonuwatta Central College Welimada with a time of 15:27.1 minutes (Record held by M.M. Samarapala of Ampitiya MV Kandy, 15:2.7 mins, in 1996)
400m Hurdle U-19 Boys: Lahiru Prasanjith of Taxila MMV Horana bettered his own record with a time of 53.56 seconds (Record was 53.82 secs, in 2011)
Shot Putt U-19 Boys: Sanuja Sumanaweera of Royal Institute Colombo bettered his own record putting a distance o 14.86 M (Record was 13.88m, in 2011)
Pole Vault U-19 Girls: A. Pavithra of Arunodaya Vidyalaya Jaffna bettered her own record with a height of 3.01 meters (Record was 3.00m, in 2011)
4x100m Relay U-17 Boys: Nalanda College Colombo with a time of 43.8 seconds (Record was held by Ananda College Colombo and Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa, 43.80 secs, in 2001)
Pole Vault U-21 Girls: Shanmugarajah Thanuja of Arunodaya Vidyalaya Jaffna bettered her own record with a height of 3.11 meteres (Record was 3.10m, in 2011)
400m Hurdles U-17 Girls: Milina Kumari Weerasinghe of A. Rathnayaka Central College Walala with a time of 67.6 seconds (Record held by K.G.P. Kumari, same school, 77.73 sec, in 2010)
Discus Throw U-19 Girls: Amanthi Silva of St. Bridget’s Convent Colombo with a distance of 39.46 meters. (Record held by Sonali Kumari of Sewamuktha Kandaura MV Palugaswewa, in 2006)
Pole Vault U-19 Boys: Ishara Sandaruwan of A Rathnayaka Central College Walala bettered his own record with a height of 4.31 meters (Record was 4.00m, in 2011)
4x100m Relay U-15 Girls: St. Josephs’ BMV Kegalle bettered their own record with a time of 4:12.01 seconds (Record was 4:16.77 mins, in 2011)
100m U-21 Girls: S.R.J.P. Senanayaka of St. Joseph’s BMV Kegalle with a time of 12.30 seconds. (Record held by Shashiprabha Jayasingha, same school, 12.31 secs, 2010)
