Sri Lanka’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) recently launched industry trade journal FutureTel, as part of the opening ceremonies for the 12th Global Symposium for Regulators, the recently concluded international conference for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which was held in Sri Lanka.

Intended to be a resource for academics, researchers, engineers, etc., the first edition of this bi-annual publication comprised articles entitled; “LTE Deployments in Sri Lanka”; “Challenges in IPv6 Deployments”; “Importance of Cyber Security”; and “Digital Television Broadcasting”. The journal’s Founding Editor is Dr. Manodha Gamage, a consultant at TRCSL. In his inaugural message for the publication, TRCSL chairman Lalith Weeratunga noted; “The launch of ‘FutureTel’ is a moment of pride for the institution. It fulfills a long felt need of the fast paced and constantly evolving telecommunications industry in Sri Lanka… Progress in the highly competitive telecommunications industry requires staying abreast with innovations and trends both in Sri Lanka and abroad, particularly for telecommunications businesses and executives. Information being a source of power, acquiring an edge over competition is helped by regular reading of industry related literature.”

While TRCSL Director General Anusha Palpita, in his message in the journal, stated: “As the regulator, we have established a good rapport with the stakeholders of the telecommunications industry, through regular meetings and consultations where their views in relation to problem areas and suggestions for improvement of the regulatory environment are given a patient hearing and wherever possible acted upon in the larger interest of the industry.

This journal will further enhance the interactive process between the TRCSL and the various stakeholders, in addition to providing a platform for dissemination of news of happenings and all round development taking place in the telecommunication sphere of activity in the country”.
