Galle Sanghamitta GS’s mission is to produce peaceful Buddhist women
Sanghamitta Girls College is a foremost Buddhist Girls’ school in the Galle district. The institution has brought amazing achievements to the nation. The school was established in 1919, with the intention of establishing the first Buddhist Girls’ School in South by Francis Amarasiri Wickramasinghe Muhandiram. Today it is a leading girl’s school not only in Southern Sri Lanka but also to the whole nation. It accommodates over 5600 students.
The first half of the 20th century passed with no English Buddhist Girls Colleges in Galle, allowing no girls to receive English education to experience the value of Buddhism. Seeing no way out for this Francis Amarasiri Wickramasinghe Muhandiram made arrangements to establish the first Buddhist Girls’ School in South in 1919. This was done upon the idea put forward by the then principal of Mahinda Vidyalaya, Galle.
Sanghamitta Balika Vidyalaya which was first established at Wellawatta Oroppuwatta, Galle was shifted to a beautiful little mountain which ranged for 1.5 acre facing the Galle – Wackwella road. An American lady Mrs. Hay was the first principal at Sanghamitta. This institution started with only six girls.
Mother Sanghamitta, who attained an indescribable enhancement within a very short period, celebrated her glamorous 25th Anniversary in 1945. Declaration of Sanghamitta as a government school on January 1, 1946, which had been a private English Educational Institution prior to that, was the start of a new era.
The era of the school (1957-1970) under the assistance of Dr. Thilokasundari Kariyawasam, turned an eternal page of Sanghamitta history. The institution became a prominent school in the island. During this period when Sanghamitta was honoured as the mother of whole Buddhist female generation in the South, it showed its superiority by producing 105 students to the university in 1964. Sanghamitta spent the golden age of her life during this period by producing the best A/L results in Sri Lanka.
After her 75th anniversary (in 1996) mother Sanghamitta started reaching the pinnacle of her development in physical resources and every other sectors, especially in education and brought success into each and every section in extracurricular activities of the school.
Under the assistance of Mrs. Saraswathi Dahanayaka, who is the present serving principal of Sanghamitta Girls’ College who won the 2012 “Prathiba Praba Pranama award and was commissioned as a Brevet Colonel of the NCCC by the National Cadet Corps Sri Lanka, the number of students increased to 5662 and the academic staff rose up to 198 along with the expansion of education network of the school. Other new extracurricular activities including games like scrabble, spell master etc. were inaugurated.
Over the years, Sanghamitta Girls’ College has earned its reputation in various speheres of academic excellence as well as in extracurricular activities. The students have have done well in the highest grades at provincial levels, as well as at all-island level. Grade Five scholarship examinations have brought the College supreme victory. They take pride in the fact that this year they have produced 112 students who got through the examination and Sewni Amanethmi Jagoda emerged 2nd in the district (all-Island 4th) which is truly an academic accomplishment to the college.
Annually a large number students pass the GCE (O/L) examination and students gained 9 A’s. In 2011 Yasasvi Bhaghyani (English Medium) obtained District 1st rank while Vinma Sarindi (English Medium obtained 4th rank and 42 students secured
9A’s.
At the G.C.E. (A/L) examination, M.M.Lakna Hansani of Commerce stream took 2nd rank and Nadee Senevirathna of the maths stream obtained District 1st ranking in 2009. In 2010 altogether 150 students gained entry to leading universities and 31 of them obtained 3A’s in all t streams. M. Achini Ereshika Amarathunga took 7th rank in the island. In 2011 S.A.L. Rajini Salwathura, W.V.Pavithra Sandeepani and Tharaka Prabani Wijesekara obtained district 2nd and 3rd ranks in Bio and Arts streams.
Extracurricular activities take a prominent place in Sanghamitta Balika Vidyalaya which helps them to meet their mission easily. The Girl Guides and the Chess team annually bring fruitful victories and colours to the college. Moreover the college sports teams, debating team, and language units bring successes to the college. Apart from these the Aesthetic Sections bring glory to mother Sanghamitta every year with National Level successes.
They won the championship in Senior Outstation category at the Light of Asia English Oratory Competitions and Nimeshi Dissanayaka was placed 3rd in the Island at the CIMA Spell Master Competitions in 2011. Sachithi Illeperuma (under 14) represented the Sri Lankan Badminton team at a Japanese tournament, Nishadhi Dilrukshi de Silva represented Sri Lankan Schools at the 21st USM International Netball Competitions 2011 held in Malaysia.Tharini Dulmini Ranaweera bagged the bronze medal at the Bio/ Science Olympiad Competitions.
Sanghamitta Girls College is marching forward by winning various awards. They have been winning the Best International School Award consecutively since 2009 and the “Jaya Sak Vidhu Upahara” for obtaining the best results in the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination in 2011 and 2012.
It’s the mission of the administration is to produce knowledgeable, well-disciplined, peaceful and economically productive generation of Buddhist women who can face the challenges of ever changing world.
