Ladies go down screaming
An already fiercely- contested traditional hockey encounter between Ladies College and Bishop’s College was bathed in several fresh pints of bad blood, as a controversial first half goal gave the Bishopians a 1-0 victory at the Astro Turf Reid Avenue, yesterday.
As the ball was worked around in the Ladies’ half with just four minutes on the clock, their goalkeeper lost part of her protective equipment causing both her and her teammates in defence to gesticulate wildly for the referee to blow his whistle. However, their pleas proved futile and succeeded only in providing an open path to the goal for Amira Gaffoor, who confidently slapped the ball into the goal.
Besides giving Bishop’s the lead, the goal also sparked angry protests from the Ladies College team, coach and fans, and eventually led to the game being held up for nearly fifteen minutes, with the team refusing to play.
Nevertheless, the goal stood, and the game was resumed at a frenetic pace, with both teams charging at each other with equal aggression.
Upon coming out onto the pitch for the second half, Ladies College knew their chances of walking away winners were growing slimmer by the second and promptly launched a series of well-worked excursions towards the edge of the Bishopians’ goal area. However, these attempts, like their previous protests, ended up fruitless, as the girls from Bishop’s gritted their teeth and defended relentlessly.
As the game grew older, so did the urgency with which Ladies College played, but they were still unable to breach the defensive wall Bishop’s had built around their goal area.
Several times though Bishop’s were aided by some very ordinary play by Ladies’ attackers, who squandered a wealth of incisive moves sculpted by their tenacious and creative midfielders.
Bishop’s College too were guilty of profligacy in front of goal, but their one-goal cushion ensured that this carelessness would not bring their downfall, as they raised their hands in triumph at the sound of the final whistle and sauntered off the field with firm bragging rights over their traditional rivals.
