ACCA plans to expand their reach in the country to benefit students in Sri Lanka
View(s):The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is one of the largest and fastest-growing global accountancy bodies with 154,000 members and 432,000 students in 170 countries.
With a strong presence in Sri Lanka ,ACCA recently awarded 3 of their tuition providers with Gold status in recognition of meeting the challenging quality assurance measures and performance indicators of ACCA such as the institution’s overall management and more specifically its ACCA course management and delivery. ACCA also currently has one platinum status tuition provider as well. Therefore students studying ACCA courses at these institutes can now be assured that they are learning from the best, in terms of rigorous programmes, dedicated and experienced lecturers using innovative teaching techniques and track proven academic achievements.
With such strides taking place, the Head of ACCA Sri Lanka Ms. Nilusha Ranasinghe and Ms. Afra Sajjad Head of Education MENASA Region, outlined the plans they had in place for the future of the qualification in Sri Lanka.
Stating the current potential she saw for the qualification, Ms.Ranasinghe said “ We have seen since we started the marketing efforts here in Sri –Lanka ,that the people have understood and appreciated the ACCA qualification and it’s values . From our ethics modules to our new suite of qualifications, the Foundations in Accountancy, that gives the younger students the opportunity to obtain a professional qualification whilst being in school which will compliment their A/L studies and by the time they have finished their Advanced level’s they can start their journey in to Accounting and Finance , to the added benefit of being able to obtain a degree from the Oxford Brookes University, the ACCA qualifications have been enthusiastically embraced by students in Sri Lanka.
She further added that “The potential for the qualification is very high due to the fact that we are one of the few to offer a qualification that comprehensively covers the technical and management skills accountants are expected to master such as performance management, financial management, governance risk and ethics, corporate reporting, financial strategy, management decision making and taxation and auditing and combines the benefits of traditional accounting skills with a wide ranging and forward looking syllabus. In addition, as Sri Lanka gets ready for compliance with the International Financial Reporting Standards , ACCA’s Diploma in International Financial Reporting Standards (Dip IFRS) will enable finance professionals to update their knowledge and also to certify the competency gained in this specialized field..
Talking of the value addition made by the tuition providers, Dr.Afra Sajad Regional Head of South Asia, stated that Sri Lanka was a country that ACCA was very keen to develop their presence in, due to the large pool of talented students it had,. She said that plans were currently underway to expand the reach of ACCA by looking at prospects to take the qualification to key towns and regions within the country. ACCA already has a presence in Kandy and Jaffna .
She also outlined that ACCA would provide all the support required for these tuition providers to reach the quality standards expected by ACCA . These will include interactive sessions with the trainers and lecturers to draw out the problems, suggestions and ideas on the best teaching methodologies and best practices , assessment methodologies and the examiner feedback received on student exam performance, forums on identifying challenges and methods of how to initiate solutions to help improve exam performance.
Speaking of the current tuition providers Dr.Sajjad affirmed that she was proud to note that most of the students from these institutes had pass rates for most of the ACCA subjects that was above global rates and added that Sri Lanka has also been a country to achieve a large amount of prize winners .
Endorsing these comments Ms.Ranasinghe added in conclusion” We at ACCA will continue to harness in our students, financial knowledge and professional skills which are needed by organisations in challenging economic conditions.
