Slim volume packed with stroke facts
View(s):‘Stroke Care’, a comprehensive book covering all topics with regard to ‘brain attacks’ and how to deal with them, will be launched tomorrow at the Sri Lanka Medical Association auditorium, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 at 5 p.m.
Written by Consultant Neurologist Dr. Padma S. Gunaratne of the National Hospital and her team, this book also available in Sinhala and Tamil, is her parting gift as she hands over the reins of the Presidency of the National Stroke Association of Sri Lanka.
The launch coincides with the celebration of World Stroke Day which falls today and will have Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena as Chief Guest.
Slim and handy, ‘Stroke Care’ is power-packed with all the information not only a doctor will need but also the multidisciplinary team including nurses, therapists, counsellors and social service officers that should be looking after victims, as well as carers and the patients themselves.
It is easy to read, with the information being given in short question and answer form, with many sketches and photographs to drive home the points. The chapters range from symptoms and prevention to diagnosis, from nursing care to nutrition and exercise and from long-term care to social support.
With one in six persons likely to have a stroke, this book is a must-have for those who not only have to deal with stroke, but would also like to prevent one.
