Junior double for Wesley at Mini Rugby carnival
Wesley College Colombo earned major honours at the Mini Rugby Carnival, organised by the Ananda College Junior Rugby Development Group for the second successive year with the participation of 19 leading schools from Colombo and Kandy.
The tournament was held on October 13 at Havelock Park in Colombo. Wesley College clinched the Cup championships of the Under-9 and 10 age categories beating top rugby-playing teams from Colombo and Kandy. Zahira College Colombo won the Under-11 Cup championship while Science College Mt. Lavinia secured the Under-12 Cup title. One of the leading rugby-playing schools from Colombo, Isipathana College won the most senior age category of the competition, the Under-13 Cup championship.
The hosts Ananda College too had reasons to be content, winning six trophies from the competition. The Ananda College Under-12 ‘A’ team clinched the Plate championship as their Under-13 and 11 sides emerged Plate runners-up. Their Under-9 and 11 teams emerged Bowl champions while the Under-12 ‘B’ side won the Bowl runners-up.
According to the organisers, the objective of the event was to promote the game among the younger generation by giving them match experience while nurturing sportsmanship. Asian Finance and Ceylon Leather Products came forward to support the cause as sponsors of the event. – NA
