Tharindi Sewmini(12) and Kavindu Akalanka Bandara(5) suffer from a rare genetic disorder, Gaucher Disease. This disease caused by a deficient enzyme results in excessive glycogen depositing in the spleen, liver, brain and the bone marrow. The two children suffer from loss of sight, memory and blood due to the disease, which could lead to death if untreated.

The disease process can be corrected by the replacement of the deficient enzyme with Cerezyme (imiglucerase for injection) which is not available through the state health sector in Sri Lanka. The cost of treatment for Tharindi and Kavindu will approximately come to Rs. 650,000 and Rs. 400,000 a month respectively. Their father S.A. Chandana Kudabandara has launched an appeal to raise the funds required to treat his children. Both he and his wife are employed in the government sector at a meagre wage and find themselves unable to meet the financial requirements to save their children’s lives. The couple, who lost another child to a fatal disease previously, appeal to kind benefactors to come to their aid financially. Donations could be sent to Account No 3552720 at the Bank of Ceylon Welimada branch.
